5
mkquota manual

6
7
mkquota generates a quota file for Linux disk quotas.
8
9
Example

10
11

12 <kbd>
13 $ mkquota -user >/userquota
14 </kbd>
15 <kbd>
16 $ mkquota -group >/groupquota
17 </kbd>
18

19
20
Synopsis

21
22 mkquota
23
24 {-user] -group}
25
26
27
Description

28
29
mkquota creates a quota file for use with the Linux
30 disk quota system.
31
32
The file is just an initial file; it doesn't contain any quotas
33 for any users or groups.
34
35
More important, the file does not contain any current usage information;
36 it says all users or groups have zero current usage.
37
38
If you want to use this quota file to begin doing quota administration
39 on an existing filesystem, there are two ways you can get the initial
40 current usage information into the file:
41
42

43
Use quotause, with this initial file as input and identify
44 the filesystem for which it is to be the quota file. quotause
45 will create another quota file as output that has all the proper
46 current usage information in it.
47
48
Use quotactl to turn on quota administration for the
49 filesystem of interest, using the initial file as the quota file.
50 Then figure out the current usage information somehow and then use
51 quotactl to set each of the current usage values in turn.
52
53

54
55
In any case, the kernel keeps the quota file updated as users use
56 and return filesystem space. Once you get the usage information right,
57 it will normally remain right.
58
59
The initial file has unlimited quota for everyone. To change this,
60 Use quotactl when quota administration is turned on with this
61 file as the quota file.
62

64
Options

65
66

67
68
-user
69
70
This option makes mkquota generate a user quota file,
71 as opposed to a group quota file.
72
73
-group
74
75
This option makes mkquota generate a group quota file,
76 as opposed to a user quota file.
