    5 A snapshot of the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN) holdings is
    6 taken from time to time and distributed on physical media.  It may be
    7 bundled with the TeX Live system, or distributed separately.

    9 In any case, the licensing conditions of the packages in the CTAN
   10 snapshot vary widely.  In particular (and in contrast to TeX Live), not
   11 all the software meets free software or open source criteria: some are
   12 available only as binaries, others have restrictions on commercial
   13 resale, and so on.

   15 Furthermore, the creators of the CTAN snapshot have explicitly received
   16 permission from some authors of software to include their material; this
   17 software is in the ctan/nonfree/ subdirectory.  (The nonfree area on the
   18 CTAN servers, http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/nonfree, contains much
   19 more software that is not included here.)  This permission does not
   20 extend to any redistributors; you yourself must also contact such
   21 authors with regards to your own distribution, or refrain from including
   22 such software.

   24 Thus, when redistributing the CTAN snapshot, you must be very careful
   25 that you are not violating any license conditions.  Since each situation
   26 is different, we cannot offer any general advice.

   28 To learn redistribution requirements, of course the licensing
   29 information within the packages themselves is the final authority.  For
   30 aggregate information, we suggest checking the TeX Catalogue:
   31 http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/catalogue.html (or any
   32 CTAN mirror).  The Catalogue is also included in the CTAN snapshot in
   33 ctan/help/Catalogue, but the online version will have updates.
